Episode 1

In the present, after serving 15 years in prison for the murder of Alexandra Forrest, Daniel Gallagher is paroled with the goals of reconnecting with his family and proving his innocence. In the past, 2008, Dan celebrates his 40th birthday and first meets the charming colleague whose death would eventually lead to his incarceration and the destruction of the life he knew.

Episode 2

In the past, an intensely passionate connection turns sour when Dan realizes Alex wants more from him than the impression she's been giving. In the present Dan’s loved ones reel from his reappearance in their lives. Dan and Mike are reunited and Ellen discusses her hopes for her relationship with Dan with her therapist.

Episode 3

In the past, a look into Alex’s personal and professional life outside of Dan and a retelling of the events of their affair from her perspective. In the present Dan reconnects with Beth and hoping to find evidence to exonerate himself, begins his investigation with Mike resulting in a visit to Brooker.

Episode 4

A retelling of the emotional impact of Dan’s betrayal from the perspective of Dan's wife, Beth. As the Gallagher's settle into their new home, Beth meets potential buyers for the house they are leaving and tries to ignore the gut feeling that something is not right in her marriage, until tragedy strikes and makes that impossible.

Episode 5

In the past after a chance encounter has deadly consequences, Dan decides to confess to Beth about his affair with Alex, while Alex's actions against the Gallaghers only get more severe. By the end of the day Dan's fate is already sealed, even if he doesn't know it yet. In the present Ellen bonds with a new friend while Dan meets an old colleague for lunch and information.

Episode 6

Further in Alex's past, before she met Dan, is reflected through her time spent with Emma and Clay, two people whose kindness and help she was incapable of accepting. Dan's world crashes down around him when he is arrested for killing Alex and must enlist an unlikely source for help.

Episode 7

In the present, Dan prepares the application for his new trial and shares it with the people in his life who were most affected by the original trial’s verdict. While in the past, Dan prepares his defense with Cabral. In the more distant past, key moments in Alex’s life shape the woman she becomes when she meets Dan.

Episode 8

The collision course Dan set for everyone around him plays out in both the past and present. Dan tries to move forward with regret and honesty, agreeing to continue at Jorge's firm and revealing to Ellen that the judge denied his appeal. When Mike and Dan are invited to brunch at Beth and Arthur's home, it becomes clear he is surrounded by secrets.
