Overview: Germany, 1970. Gherta's visit to a museum dedicated to Conrad Rontgen affects her profoundly. Years later, she is confronted by Duma, who entrusts her with important research into the Fragments and some kind of machine. Duma himself appears to be acting on behalf of other, more insidious forces. Meanwhile, back in the main plot, Helga remembers lots of things about her past life as Seraphine.
