Colin and Jane have decided that their marriage isn't working and that the best thing is to separate. This could be tough on their children, Joe and Emily, but their parents are civilized about the whole thing and determined to remain friends. In fact, after the split their relationship improves considerably. Jane, a nurse, embarks upon a new relationship with Roger, a single parent of three children, the terrible trio of David, Felicity and Robbie. Colin, meanwhile, has started to see Jennifer, the therapist he and Jane consulted when trying to work through their problems.

Joe unwittingly sabotages his mother's dinner date with her new boyfriend, Roger.

Joe and Emily meet Roger's kids—the children from hell—and wonder if Mum having a boyfriend is such a good idea.

Joe and Emily are dismayed when Colin decides to ditch his boring image and becomes a "groovy dad". Meanwhile, Joe's toy aeroplane gets stuck on Robbie's head.

After discovering his father's new girlfriend is his school PE mistress, Joe tries to sabotage their relationship, and attempts to reunite Jane and Roger.

David develops a crush on Emily, and tries to help Joe when he's the victim of a school bully.

Joe shoots a horror video about his family for school.
Episode 8
After David sets his sights on Emily, she decides to live with Colin and Jennifer to avoid him. Joe and Felicity wreck Emily's favourite shirt.
Episode 9
Emily's afternoon hits the skids when Colin tries his hand at painting with Roger. Joe and Emily arrange a weekend away for Jane and Roger.
Episode 10
Joe enlists King Arthur's help with a Camelot. Meanwhile, Emily worries that Jennifer is pregnant.
Episode 11
Felicity disowns her family after Roger argues with Jane over a drill. Meanwhile, Joe believes his parents have been taken over by aliens.
Episode 12
Emily panics when she sees Jane and Colin kissing, and Roger's big sister comes to stay.
Episode 13
Colin and Jennifer decide to get married in a quiet ceremony. Roger expresses his commitment to Jane by installing swing doors between their home.
