The poverty-stricken partners are hired by three members of the strange Shingouz race to track down a “holy vase” on the planet Furbok. While in a junkyard looking for spaceship parts, Valerian finds an android called RGE, but they're both taken prisoner by Dr. Zessel. Zessel creates an android double of Valerian to pump Laureline for information, while Val and his new android buddy hatch a plot to escape the mad doctor's dungeon.

Valerian and Laureline are to fly a rare creature to a zoo, but before they can, it breaks out of its cage and releases a bird that bites Valerian's shoulder. The bird's poison causes insanity, then death, so it's up to Laureline to get an antidote, which requires a flower from the tree with 100,000 limbs.

Valerian and Laureline are hired to transport drazel eggs to a safe haven. Easy enough, except that whoever hears a drazel cry is doomed to laugh to death and the babies are due to hatch in 24 hours. Flying a shortcut through the dangerous route 188 leads to an asteroid collision and the loss of precious time.
